Report from the Hub of the Plains
Here I sit in the middle of the largest pancake in the world. The southern edge of the Llano Estacado plateau is the flattest place I have ever seen. Smack dab in the middle of it is the shining city of Lubbock. My home town.
I’m here to see my sister (Amanda), her husband (Jeff), and their 3 kids (Cooper, Nathan, and Shelby). Jeff’s 20 year high school reunion is being celebrated in his hometown of Whiteface, about 45 miles due west of Lubbock and just a few miles from the New Mexico state line.
At the moment, I’m sitting at J&B Coffee Company. It’s a nice little coffeehouse north of the Texas Tech campus. And the only place that was open at 7 AM this morning when I wanted some joe and a good wi-fi connection. When I first got here, 4 of Lubbock’s finest were having coffee, but no doughnuts. It’s now almost 9 and it’s been hopping all morning.
I spent last night with friends Lauren and Stephen, who have also graciously put me up for the weekend. We had a lovely dinner. And, for Lubbock cognoscenti who may be reading this, I believe we saw the notorious Virgil.
The only issue I’m having with being up here on the high plains is a bit of a mild allergic reaction to something (cotton? cattle? dust?). So, now I’m going to find a secluded spot for a bit of EFT before I move on to my stepmother’s house to meet up with the family.
